Mission and Scope of the Group
The mission of the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) committee of the Muslim Center of Greater Princeton is to promote an inclusive, equitable and diverse culture within our community, as highlighted in our core values of advancing mutual respect, appreciating diversity and remaining socially relevant. We will do so by highlighting and creating opportunities to remove barriers and inequities due to but not limited to variations of gender, race and ethnicity, socioeconomic status, and disabilities, as modeled by the Quran and the authentic teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). Our committee will address issues of diversity targeting 3 main areas:
1) Gain a comprehensive understanding of the experiences, perspectives, and needs of our community with a focus on hearing from underrepresented members including brothers and sisters who are Black, Latino, Indigenous, women, converts, and/or having low income
2) Identify and bring to light any existing practices and policies that may be inequitable or may inadvertently contribute to disparities within the MCGP community.
3) Ensure that we are not only welcoming but that each person who attends MCGP feels that they belong as members of the community.
This October marked one year since the inception of the Muslim Center’s DEI committee. This first year, our focus was to strengthen bonds between our committee members, develop a cadence for our meetings, and hone in on our priorities. We successfully hosted an Eid Diversity potluck this past year and had several conversations with Muslim Center members and leadership about the Center’s status with respect to DEI.
